Gerd Arntz (1900—1988) was a socially inspired and politically committed artist. While working with Otto Neurath, a social scientist, he developed what became known as ‘ISOTYPE — International System Of TYpographic Picture Education. During his career, Arntz designed around 4000 different pictograms and abstracted illustrations for the system. Alongside this body of work he also produced an ‘atlas’ of visual charts which provide an overview of the essential empirical data of the world at that time. Perhaps one of the most Influential information designer of his day his work is now available as an iPhone app from Ontwerpwerk.
